Nobu Ueno
Summer of Sobu (July - August 2004)

Rules and Timeframe:
All photos must be taken during morning and evening commutation on the JR Sobu Line within the months of July and August 2004. Platforms, station interiors and train cars are in bounds. Photos cannot be taken outside of the station turnstiles. Only a single amateur hand-held digital camera may be used.Artist Explanation:
"The Sobu-Chuo Line is one of Tokyo's oldest and most centrally-located commuter railway lines. It literally cuts across the heart of the city, connecting the western and eastern suburbs. In total, the line spans 60 kilometers and makes use of 39 stations. Considering that a large majority of Tokyo's residents make daily train commutes to offices and schools, I decided to spend my summer by making daily trips on the Sobu Line. In particular, I hoped to explore how people typically spend their commuting time. However, I also held a deep interest in railway aesthetics - the linearity of the rails, signage and advertising, and of course trackside architecture."
