Adrian David
Profile
A major figure in France's 'New Expressionist Movement' of the 1990s, David's canvases and works on paper have always intentionally blurred the representational and the abstract, the landscape and the viewing platform. Flags become ranges of mountains and skies change colors before turning into choppy seas, where tangles of weeds become tangles of green acrylic paint. Influenced as much by web design as by the pure abstract works of Mark Rothko and Sam Francis, David strongly believes that it is the interpretation of the viewer that gives meaning to creative works.
Artist Statements
"I like old windows and doors, fallow fields, views from boats and sand darkened by the infiltration of water, but I wouldn't say that this is what I try to paint. My work is merely furniture which, validated by artistic tradition, finds its use upon delivery to a new owner, a new viewer.""
